Sunday, May 15, 2011, will be Israel’s 63rd Birthday. She is an ancient young country. Conceived centuries ago when God first gave His promise to Abraham. Pregnant with promise as a nation when Moses brought the Jews out of Egypt, and bondage, to the river’s edge of the Promised Land. Born in freedom as Joshua picked up the mantle and brought the Jews across the Jordan to inhabit The Land given to them by God. Conquered and destroyed by Babylonians, Greeks and Romans she was scattered throughout the world, but always with the cry “Next Year in Jerusalem” on her lips and in her heart. Nearly two thousand years later, she entered into the fullness of Isaiah 66:8 when she was born in a day by vote of the United Nations, 33 to 13 with 10 abstentions.
Israel has survived eight wars: 1948’s War of Independence; the Sinai Campaign 1956; The Six Day War in 1967; the War of Attrition 1968-1970; the Yom Kippur War 1973; the Lebanon War 1982; the Gulf War 1991;the Second Lebanon War 2006, all by the grace and mercy of God. She constantly fights terrorism, infiltration by the enemy, and world pressure to give up more and more of her sacred land. Yet she has more doctorate degrees per capita than any other nation and she has been one of the largest, if not the largest, contributors to discoveries and cures in health, science and technology. Her people have suffered greatly through the ages yet they have an extreme gusto for life, music, love and flowers, being the world’s second largest exporters of flowers, second only to Hawaii.
On Sunday, as Israel sings in the streets celebrating her 63rd birthday, a flotilla will be making its way toward her from Turkey, loaded with hatred and destruction towards the Jews and their land. While the flotilla makes its way south, Arab men and women who say they were displaced in 1948 and kicked out of Israel, are being encouraged to march toward her borders demanding re-entry. All the while, Palestinian youth are uprising and waging an internal war against Israel by setting fires in the dry grasslands, throwing rocks and shouting lies and threats at soldiers standing watch.
Happy birthday Israel! May she always exist and stand strong, pure and true as she does today. Happy birthday Israel…May the hand of God always protect you.
