Tonight, January 28, 2014, His Royal Highness Barack Hussein Obama, is going to stride to the podium in the Un-United States House of Representatives, amidst resounding applause, hand shakes and toothy smiles, to interject his verbiage upon us, the surf-lings of the Un-United States of Once Free America. His most loyal subjects will arise, applaud, nod their ‘yeses,’ and happily look into the crystal bowl of three more years of goodness and prosperity – for them.
Instead of a scepter, our king will use his mighty pen and the Once Free America will shudder. With every strike of that mighty pen comes more rules, regulations and losses of the freedoms we once enjoyed, relished in and took for granted as Americans. Are we taking those freedoms for granted now?
Think on this: You are a business person. You own a hamburger stand somewhere in the heart of the Once Free America. Times are hard due to unemployment, the poor economy and tremendous uncertainty due to the Once Courageous Congress’ failure to act. Out comes the mighty pen and now you have to pay your only employee $10.10 per hour instead of the $8.00 per hour, which you thought was fair wages for a high school kid. What will you do? Will you pay the additional $2.10, or will you shut your doors? If you do pay it, how much will you have to raise the price of your hamburgers which are already on the ‘top’ as far as pricing in your neighborhood?
What about the delivery guy? His gasoline just went up because he, too, is having to pay his help more, just to get buy. How much will he have to raise the price of his delivery service?
What about the guy that grinds the hamburger and puts it on his shelf in the meat market or grocery store? He now has to pay his cleaning staff more. They were already being paid $10.00 an hour, but now that minimum wage is $10.10 an hour, they are threatening to quit if they get don’t paid at least $13.00 an hour. Can he afford to pay them more? No. Not unless he raises the price of his hamburger to you.
What about the farmer who raised the cow to be butchered and processed for the hamburger? Will he be able to get more per pound now that he has to pay his hired man more money? Probably not. So what will happen to that farmer? Most likely, he’ll quit raising beef as a cash crop and then the banker will come by and want to know why he isn’t making his mortgage payments. Simple. He can’t afford to because he can no longer afford to pay his help; and, he can’t do the farming and raise the livestock by himself. Lose the family farm? Probably.
And the story goes on and on all the way up the food chain until you get to Congress. What will happen to them? Nothing. Absolutely nothing. They will continue to make noise, do nothing, talk about how bad things are, do nothing, cut the pay of the military to make ends meet, do nothing and then vote themselves another hard-earned raise. And why not? Golf course fees are going up because the golf-pro now has to pay his caddy more money who has to pay his baby sitter more money who has to pay more money to put gas in her car to get there. And around and around the spinning goes.
Meantime, back at the White House, the scratching of the mighty pen continues. A vacation here. A new castle in Hawaii. A castle in Washington – oh wait. That isn’t right. There isn’t a need for another castle in Washington. The king already lives in a castle and he sure doesn’t have any plans for moving. Not in 2016, 2018, 2020 or anytime in the future. Lifetime luxury has come to the king. All he needs to do is continue scratching the paper. “More ink please.”
What will we, the surfs do? I, for one, am going to go buy some tea before the price on that goes up. Tea! Yes. That is the answer. Good, dark, strong tea.
